Book Review: A Darker Shade Of Magic by V. A. Schwab

I thought I didn’t had space for more amazing books and characters. A Darker Shade Of Magic is joining my favorite books list.

A Darker Shade final for Irene

I jumped into this book by friends and authors recommendations. I read it without knowing what it was about. Reading A Darker Shade Of Magic felt like reading something I’ve never read before but I was familiar with. One of the things I loved was the blood magic. I never read a book where the character had magical blood but it was already an idea I had for a novel I’m writing. Reading about it was fascinating! Of course the idea is this book is much bigger than mine but I was happy to read about it.

The characters!! One of the things that draws me to a story is the characters. The main characters in this book are Kell and Lila. Lila is the one who stole my whole heart. She’s my new favorite female character ( I have so many! I know.) Well, Lila is a role model and not for the reason that she steals a bit too much. Lila is determinate, she know what she wants and goes for it. She’s looking for adventures and is willing to risk everything for the sake of her dreams.

“Aren’t you afraid of dying?” he asked Lila now.
She looked at him as if it were a strange question. And then she shook her head. “Death comes for everyone,” she said simply. “I’m not afraid of dying. But I am afraid of dying here.” She swept her hand over the room, the tavern, the city. “I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still.

The first half of the book might be a bit slow but interesting enough to keep you reading. V. E. Schwab put us in a story where you’ll always want to learn more and more. The rest of the book, specially the last 100 pages, is non-stop action and heart stopping moments.

The ending is not a cliffhanger but the whole story will leave you wanting more.

5/5 stars

  1. Oooo, isn’t it great when you sit down and find out a book is worth all the hype? Also, I love that you are working on a fantasy novel! You should do a post about your own writing sometime…it is so great to find heavy readers who also like to write! 😀

  2. This is one on my TBR for this year that I’m crossing my fingers I’m going to make it to. Glad to hear you liked it though because you are the first “first hand” account I’ve actually had on it. Also how’s the writing going? Good I hope.

  3. I only just read it, but YES I TOTALLY GET EVERYTHING IN THIS REVIEW!! 😀
Lila is such an awesome character! Actually, imo they’re all pretty awesome – I even liked Fletcher! It’s so hard to pick a fav character for me >.<
But yeah, I also completely agree about how it's not a cliffhanger, but it leaves you wanting more – IM SO GLAD that Victoria Schwab decided to do that, because if it was a cliffhanger I would have thrown the book against the wall and just cried. For days.
HAHA ANYWAY GREAT REVIEWWW – short, simple, sweet and to the point!
