Book Review: All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

This book will ruin your life. You’ve been warned.

I’m angry. So angry, like you have no idea. After I write this review I just want to forget that I read this book. I wasn’t expecting this to happen. I thought I was going to love this book but I didn’t, I am so mad at it. I’m glad I wasn’t too attached to the characters because this was going to be way worse.

I started  reading it and disliking it until it comes to a part where I was “oh woah fuck” this book just ruined my life. It really did. It’s been so long since I don’t read a book about suicide and that ended up like this one. It was totally unexpected. I felt so bad for that characters, sad and angry, everything.

Connecting with the book was hard at first. I don’t think it was the story but maybe the writing style. Finch was the character I could connect with the most because his depression was so real. But the love story felt kind of bleh. I hated how often Violet expressed that she felt   ” a shock” when she had any contact with Finch. The whole story was okay but the ending was totally awful for the characters. This book is really a heart breaker.

If you like or are looking for a life ruiner book I totally invite you to read All The Bright Places.

  1. My friend has been nagging me to read this book for so long but I have a feeling I know how this book ends and it makes me hesitant to pick it up. I can definitely see how it may provoke an intense emotional reaction so I’ll have to be in the right mood to read it.

  2. I kinda get this?
I’m still in the middle of reading this – but I’ve stopped reading it for a while now, bc it got too drab and dry for me? IDK
Anyway, IM FEARFUL to start now bc you seem to dislike it a lot :/
Great review regardless though – you really have a great voice!

    1. Thanks for your comment! I think I started to dislike the book when every time a character was introduced the author described them. Maybe when you finish it, you will understand more. I see a lot of people saying this book is beautiful but for me it was very painful.

  3. This book made me so angry, it was an utter piece of garbage. The romanticising of mental illness and suicide just made me so angry and frustrated! The ending got me really badly, if you are in that state of mind, the likeliness of you doing something like that for someone else is very unlikely!
sorry, ugh this books needs to leave my life!

      1. I think I gave it away and I don’t care if I never get it back! There is a growing trend of books about mental illness and to be quite frank they are all mostly terrible but for some reason people just fall for it and romanticise the entire thing. Im over it!
